Supernova remnants (SNRs) in the Galaxy are believed to be most likely accelerators of cosmic-rays (CRs) in an energy range less than 310^15 eV. Thus SNRs emit synchrotron X-rays by high-energy electrons. Sano et al. (2014) investigated spatially-resolved X-ray spectral properties of a shell-type SNR RX1713.77-3946 which shows strong non-thermal X-ray emissions. A large variation in the photon index is found and the photon index tends to be hard with increasing an interstellar gas density, suggesting that CR electrons are efficiently accelerated in denser interstellar gas environments. Few studies have focused on a photon index variation in superbubbles which possess 100-1000 pc diameter shells of swept-up interstellar materials containing hot (10^6 K) shock-heated gas. The superbubble 30 Dor C in the Large Magellanic Cloud is one of the best targets for examining the photon index variation, because 30 Dor C is by far strong non-thermal X-ray emissions, and thus provides an ideal laboratory for probing non-thermal emission mechanisms in the supperbubble. We investigated X-ray spectral properties of the superbubble with a high spatial resolution of on the order of 10 pc. Consequently, the spectra in the west region of 30 Dor C can be described with a combination of absorbed thermal and non-thermal models while the spectra in the east region can be fitted with an absorbed non-thermal model. The photon index and intensity in 2-10 keV show variations of 2.0-3.5 and (0.6-8.0) 10^-7 erg/s/cm^2, respectively. The temperature of the thermal component ranges from 0.1 to 0.3 keV. We will discuss an interaction between the hot gas and an interstellar gas using mutiwavelength data.
Through the use of the Fibre Large Array Multi Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) on the Very Large Telescope (VLT), the VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey (VFTS) has obtained optical spectra of 800 massive stars in 30 Dor, avoiding the core region of the dense star cluster R136 because of difficulties with crowding. Repeated observations at multiple epochs allow determination of the orbital motion of potentially binary objects. For a sample of 452 apparently single stars, robust stellar parameters-such as effective temperatures, luminosities, surface gravities, and projected rotational velocities-are determined by modeling the observed spectra. Composite spectra of visual multiple systems and spectroscopic binaries are not considered here because their parameters cannot be reliably inferred from the VFTS data. To match the derived atmospheric parameters of the apparently single VFTS stars to stellar evolutionary models, we use the Bayesian code Bonnsai. (2 data files).
Least squares regression is proposed as a moving-windows method for analysis of a series of spectra acquired as a function of external perturbation. The least squares moving-window (LSMW) method can be considered an extended form of the Savitzky-Golay differentiation for nonuniform perturbation spacing. LSMW is characterized in terms of moving-window size, perturbation spacing type, and intensity noise. Simulation results from LSMW are compared with results from other numerical differentiation methods, such as single-interval differentiation, autocorrelation moving-window, and perturbation correlation moving-window methods. It is demonstrated that this simple LSMW method can be useful for quantitative analysis of nonuniformly spaced spectral data with high frequency noise.
We provide a complete characterization of the astrophysical properties of the σ Ori Aa, Ab, B hierarchical triple system and an improved set of orbital parameters for the highly eccentric σ Ori Aa, Ab spectroscopic binary. We compiled a spectroscopic data set comprising 90 high-resolution spectra covering a total time span of 1963 days. We applied the Lehman-Filhés method for a detailed orbital analysis of the radial velocity curves and performed a combined quantitative spectroscopic analysis of the σ Ori Aa, Ab, B system by means of the stellar atmosphere code FASTWIND. We used our own plus other available information onmore photometry and distance to the system for measuring the radii, luminosities, and spectroscopic masses of the three components. We also inferred evolutionary masses and stellar ages using the Bayesian code BONNSAI. The orbital analysis of the new radial velocity curves led to a very accurate orbital solution of the σ Ori Aa, Ab pair. We provided indirect arguments indicating that σ Ori B is a fast-rotating early B dwarf. The FASTWIND+BONNSAI analysis showed that the Aa, Ab pair contains the hottest and most massive components of the triple system while σ Ori B is a bit cooler and less massive. The derived stellar ages of the inner pair are intriguingly younger than the one widely accepted for the σ Orionis cluster, at 3 1 Ma. The outcome of this study will be of key importance for a precise determination of the distance to the σ Orionis cluster, the interpretation of the strong X-ray emission detected for σ Ori Aa, Ab, B, and the investigation of the formation and evolution of multiple massive stellar systems and substellar objects. less
We report Mo isotopic data of 27 new presolar SiC grains, including 12 N-14-rich AB (N-14/N-15 > 440, AB2) and 15 mainstream (MS) grains, and their correlated Sr and Ba isotope ratios when available. Direct comparison of the data for the MS grains, which came from low-mass asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars with large s-process isotope enhancements, with the AB2 grain data demonstrates that AB2 grains show near-solar isotopic compositions and lack s-process enhancements. The near-normal Sr, Mo, and Ba isotopic compositions of AB2 grains clearly exclude born-again AGB stars, where the intermediate neutron-capture process (i-process) takes place, as theirmore stellar source. On the other hand, low-mass CO novae and early R-and J-type carbon stars show C-13 and N-14 excesses but no s-process enhancements and are thus potential stellar sources of AB2 grains. Because both early R-type carbon stars and CO novae are rare objects, the abundant J-type carbon stars (10%-15% of all carbon stars) are thus likely to be a dominant source of AB2 grains. less
New data sources are used to assess Lick/IDS feature strength gradients inside the half-light radius Re of the compact Local Group elliptical galaxy M32. A Hubble Space Telescope (HST) STIS spectrum seemed to indicate ionized gas and a very young central stellar population. In fact, this conclusion is entirely spurious because of incomplete removal of ion hits. More robust ground-based spectra taken at the MDM Observatory are, in contrast, the most accurate measurements of Lick/IDS indices yet obtained for M32. All but a few (of 24 measured) indices show a statistically significant gradient. The CN indices show a maximum at 4\" radius, dropping off both toward the nucleus and away from it. At 2\" radius there is a discontinuity in the surface brightness profile, but this feature is not reflected in any spectral feature. Comparing with models, the index gradients indicate a mean age and abundance gradient in the sense that the nucleus is a factor of 2.5 younger and a factor of 0.3 dex more metal-rich than at 1Re. This conclusion is only weakly dependent on which index combinations are used and is robust to high accuracy. Stars near the M32 nucleus have a mean age and heavy element abundance [M/H] of (4.7 Gyr, +0.02), judging from models by Worthey with variable abundance ratios. This result has very small formal random errors, although, of course, there is significant age-metallicity degeneracy along an (age, abundance) line segment from (5.0 Gyr, 0.00) to (4.5 Gyr, +0.05). An abundance pattern of [C/M]=+0.077 (carbon abundance affects CN, C24668, and the bluer Balmer features), [N/M]=-0.13, [Mg/M]=-0.18, [Fe/M]0.0, and [Na/M]=+0.12 is required to fit the feature data, with a fitting precision of about 0.01 dex (with two caveats: the [Fe/M] guess has about twice this precision because of the relative insensitivity of the Fe5335 feature to iron, and the [Na/M] value may be falsely amplified because of interstellar absorption). Model uncertainties make the accuracies
Archival high-dispersion International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) spectra have been used to search for circumstellar gas absorption features in alpha PsA (A3 V), a nearby (6.7 pc) proto-planetary system candidate. Recent sub-millimeter mapping observations around the region of alpha PsA indicate a spatially resolved dust disk like the one seen around Beta Pic. To determine how closely this putative disk resembles that of Beta Pic, we have searched for signatures of circumstellar gaseous absorption in all the available IUE high-dispersion data of alpha PsA. Examination of co-added IUE spectra shows weak circumstellar absorptions from excited levels in the resonance multiplet of Fe II near 2600 A. We also conclude that the sharp C I feature near 1657 A, previously identified as interstellar absorption toward alpha PsA, likely has a circumstellar origin. However, because the weakness of these absorption features, we will consider the presence of circumstellar gas as tentative and should be verified by using the Goddard High-Resolution Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. No corresponding circumstellar absorption is detected in higher ionization Fe III and Al III. Since the collisionally ionized nonphotospheric Al III resonance absorption seen in Beta Pic is likely formed close to the stellar surface, its absence in the UV spectra of alpha PsA could imply that, in contrast with Beta Pic, there is no active gaseous disk infall onto the central star. In the alpha PsA gaseous disk, if we assume a solar abundance for iron and all the iron is in the form of Fe II, plus a disk temperature of 5000 K, the Fe II UV1 absorption at 2611.8743 A infers a total hydrogen column density along the line of sight through the circumstellar disk of N(H) approximately equals 3.8 x 10(exp 17)/cm. 153554b96e
