For their first official release, a four-song demo cassette entitled All Lights Fucked on the Hairy Amp Drooling was recorded in 1992 and self-released in 1993. In the spring of 1994, Godspeed You! Black Emperor performed a live set at a pub in Montreal, Quebec, which was recorded and released on cassette as Live at the Pub: Night of the Living Bands.[16] This original lineup was quickly augmented with Pezzente's older brother Benjamin, who played bass, and Eric Johnson, who played drums. Godspeed You! Black Emperor recorded their first official release on August 8, 1994, at the Power Plant Studios in Montreal, Quebec.[17] The album, titled Godspeed You! Black Emperor, was released on November 18, 1994 by No Post No Post Records;[18] it was long out of print, until it was reissued in a remastered version by The End Records in 2006.[19]

The band's name is taken from a 1976 Japanese documentary about a biker gang who became increasingly involved in terrorism. The documentary is also known as 'Godspeed You! Black Emperor' because the logo of the documentary is printed on a motorcycle brandishing a samurai sword.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor are no strangers to controversy and have been blacklisted by the Canadian federal government for their political activism. Before the federal government's ban on the band, they supported the Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka and the IRA in Northern Ireland, both of which were accused of human rights violations. In 2005, Godspeed You! Black Emperor were one of the first bands to use the term post-rock, in their album Hymn 052. The album marks a major shift for the band's songwriting, moving away from their traditional compositional style to adopt a looser, more experimental approach.
Godspeed You! Black Emperor has released seven studio albums and one live album on their own label, Constellation Records. They signed to the influential UK label 4AD in 2003. Their sixth studio album, Leviathan, was released on April 1, 2008. 827ec27edc
