As of 1983, the list had 31 definite planets and 30 doubtful planets. Pluto was on the list, but was removed when it was recognized as a dwarf planet. It was not known at the time that Pluto had multiple moons.
The definition changed in 1983.[75] Pluto is a dwarf planet according to the IAU, but is neither a planet nor a moon, since it is closer to the Sun and to the Earth than the Moon; it orbits the Sun between Mars and Mercury. Therefore, the criterion set out in clause 3 is not met: Pluto has a substantial atmosphere and is not `too close to the Sun'.
The Sun, Moon, and planets of the Solar System are the only astronomical objects in the Solar System known to date. Planets beyond our Solar System are thought to exist,[44][45] and are called exoplanets for short.[46][47] Nearly 500 exoplanets have been discovered.[48] Earth-like planets are thought to be common, and about 76% of all stars in the galaxy are involved with planetary systems.[2] In a double star system, planetary systems may be formed around both stars (circularization) or one star may have a planetary system while the other star does not (orbits in the plane of the double star). The term has also been applied to any large, gravitationally bound object in another star system, including dwarf stars.
The first Earth-sized planet was found orbiting the star 55 Cancri, Alpha Centauri A, in 1995.[29] As of 2013, there were approximately 400 exoplanets known, including a whole host of super-Earths and planets smaller than the Earth.[50] More than 200 exoplanets have been found to orbit a star similar to the Sun, meaning that they could be potentially habitable. d2c66b5586
