\"Junky\" begins with William Lee's first experience with morphine during World War II. It made him vomit for half a day, but he was not discouraged. As Burroughs has already observed, \"Junk is not a kick. It is a way of life.\" The rest of the book consists of a disconnected series of episodes leading to \"scores.\" True to his way-of-life credo, the author tells us very little of how a junky fills his day when he is not scrounging money, meeting his connection, or \"shooting up.\" New York, New Orleans and Mexico City seem pretty much the same when seen through a junky's eyes. Halfway through the book, we read for the first time of Lee's wife, who has materialized out of nowhere for a moment, only to return there.
Of a character named Doolie, the author writes: \"You could feel him walk right into your psyche and look around to see if anything was there he could make use of.\" A junky named Marvin is so inept that Lee always delivers his shot and runs out before Marvin has a chance to die on him. Bill Gains comes from a \"good family\" and looks it. He is \"a composite of negatives,\" which perfectly suits him for his routine of stealing overcoats out of restaurants. Gains is so anonymous that once in a while he gets anxious and \"assembles all his claims to reality\": a dishonorable discharge from Annapolis, an old dirty letter from an unidentified \"captain,\" and so on.
You have this way of making me say the opposite of everything I meanI kiss you, I hug you, but I could not feel less connected from youI know I wanted all this in the beginning, I really triedI know I caught you at a not-so-happy time of your lifeMy dreams are bigger than your junky prideI don't quite fit the part of she who loses everything and falls into insanityThe sunbeams mean nothing if you can't find the light shining in one thingI know I wanted all this in the beginning, I really triedI know I caught you at a not-so-happy time of your lifeMy dreams are bigger than your junky prideIt's fine if you're hateful as long as all in all you remain gratefulIt made me nervous to know you didn't like me, I really triedThe way I'm feeling in this moment, it can't last my whole lifeMy dreams are bigger than your junky pride
Furthermore, if one were to concentrate on one particular word or syllable, it would be \"Junky,\" a word which is, in the Court's opinion, unique and utilized only by plaintiff. Although \"Junky\" in this context refers to plaintiff's strong connection to its mail order business and its catalogs or \"junky mail,\" see, e.g., pl. ex. H, the typical connotation of the word is something substandard or secondrate. See The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language 710 (1981) (defining \"junk\" as \"[a]nything of inferior quality; something cheap or shoddy\"). This is what makes the word unique and worthy of consumer focus. After all, how often is a good or service touted for its \"inferiority.\" 59ce067264
