Following the establishment of the Franco dictatorship many works and persons of the Spanish far-right were persecuted.[36] Several anarchist writers and activists, in particular, were arrested and committed suicide as a consequence of their political activity. On the other hand, generals such as Mola were imprisoned for various reasons, or killed on the act. Hundreds of members of the Falange were killed in battle, after the collapse of the military coup. The Nazi Party maintained an embassy in Spain, and its mission was involved in clandestine dealings with the Nationalists.[37]

Prior to the establishment of fascist-held Spain opposing Francists held control of the land, and when Franco took power he unified his movement with the Falanga, creating the Falange Española Comunista (People's Party of Spain: FET).[38]

Franco advocated a conservative version of Catholicism, strict control on the press, no secret societies other than the Falange, rejection of any interferences by the workers (see National Syndicalism) with the industrial revolution that Spain was experiencing as a key element in the economic recovery. Destroying the power of the Church in education was seen as paramount, and for that reason a much-touted Brave New World was to be achieved through the abolition of academic tradition and the introduction of a form of presunto value that dismissed all ideology and everything that stood in opposition to the complete structure of society. In fact, any opposition was regarded with the utmost suspicion: on the one hand, any voice against the regime was labelled a traitor, on the other, any faction calling for corporative principles was regarded as dissident within the Falange. The restoration of traditional Spanish society at war with the Judeo-Bolshevik international conspiracy had been the credo of the first Carlists and the Falange, with subsequent rulers developing the doctrines further. Fascist leaders such as Franco – who embraced the term – used the ancient Spanish legacy of the Carlists to underpin their totalitarian philosophy. At the same time, the Carlists and the Falange created a neo-Catholicism based on restored traditions and the divine and sovereign will of the strong leader, who took on divine and royal attributes. d2c66b5586
