After the birth of Ciri, the witchers' leader Yennefer takes care of the surrogate Ciri. Ciri is told by Geralt that Yennefer is her real mother, and Ciri asks Yennefer why she didn't tell her that before. Yennefer says that she was afraid that Ciri would be afraid of her and wouldn't want to know. But she then tells the story of her own motherhood to Ciri, which leaves Ciri unable to sleep for days. Gamle Migge frees Ciri from prison, and gives her some money as short-term control of Yennefer's money. At that point, Yennefer decides to take Ciri and her surrogate Ania, "the girl", to Kaer Morhen for "education".

Ciri is an orphan. Geralt has found her abandoned in a castle. Ania tells him that she was abandoned there, because the child's birth proved too dangerous for its mother, using magic. Yennefer's cloak is also suspect because it is magical, and therefore hidden, it is illegal to use. When Geralt asks Ciri if she remembers anything, Ciri remembers that she has "bad eyes". She cannot see too well. She remembers her mother's face and the mountain she lives in. Geralt gives her a large bag and sends her to Kaer Morhen. He warns her to think hard, and not to tell anybody about the bag. She will need it, to survive in Kaer Morhen. Ciri is accompanied by Pidwion (a witcher guide), and Ania.
