The game's characters are dressed and beaten up to look like old-school arcade fighters, and they still receive random battles, custom combos, and the rest of the Fatal Fury sequel's core mechanics. What's new is the addition of juggling and one-on-one fighting (new to the series) systems, which offer more offensive and defensive options, respectively. The game also now uses the Unreal Engine, which makes Garou shine with a high-definition presentation that would make many other fighting games envious. As for Garou itself, that's the direct sequel to DOA 5, following the fighters' experiences after the events of the original game. 

Technically, the game is a continuation of the series' story, but Garou's new chapters open in a lot of different ways. Some are set in the past, while others are set in the future, with the latest game beginning in the year 2055, 20 years after the events of DOA 5.

DOA 6 also introduces a difficulty progression that rewards players for doing well and punishing those who get unlucky, and it adds a story campaign . Each of the five new characters has their own background, motivations, and fighting style, and their stories are written and voiced by the original DOA 5 developers. 

When developers go out of their way to create new fighting games, they usually put a lot of thought into their mechanics, characters, and story. When it comes to the gear-grinding, violent, competitive fighting of KOF, Garou's main concession is new characters, like Recca, who imbue the game with a late-1990s SNK-Japan feel, and a new mechanic named Shatter, which allows you to knock opponents off-balance with powerful, and often damaging, attacks.

For a long time, KOF XV was one of the few fighting games to offer a story mode, which included a handful of single-player missions. For the first time since Mighty Final Fight, it's a sprawling, more complete narrative that goes beyond its roots to give you a good reason to re-enroll as the hero of the Southtown.

The Shatter Counter is the most powerful move in KOF. While it doesn't always result in an instant knockdown, it does let you do damage to an opponent in a way that's uniquely powerful in the fighting game arena, and it's a key feature of the brand-new Blue Dragon system.
