Whatever your reasons for wanting to start a school garden, the benefits are many. (Special thanks to The Classroom Gardener for sharing their expertise on school garden benefits.) So how can you help a garden come to your school
Raised garden boxes generally have no bottoms and sit directly on the soil. This is the ideal set-up. However, if you must install your beds on concrete, consider purchasing beds with integrated bases and increasing the height of your garden to at least 18 inches. Taller beds will give you more versatility in terms of what plants you can grow. Any garden beds that have bottoms fitted to them must be designed to ensure good drainage.
Is the site secure In most locations, gardens must be fenced to keep out animal pests and little feet looking for short cuts at recess. Factor your need for a fence into your initial site considerations. Is there a location close to an existing fence that could help reduce your expenses for full perimeter fencing
If your primary goal is providing a hands-on learning opportunity, a basic teaching garden can consist of a few simple beds targeting crops that produce during the school year. This low-cost design features raised beds planted with vegetables, along with a small pollinator garden or insectary that can double as a cut flower garden. Including flowering plants in your design increases the learning opportunities for your garden as a whole.
IrrigationAs noted above, different irrigation systems are available to suit different garden designs. While drip irrigation is ideal for some set-ups, it can also be expensive and require some ongoing maintenance. Using soaker hoses or hand watering are viable options, depending on the size and configuration of your beds. You can also set up rainwater catchment systems using rain barrels to store water during the rainy season.
FencingAs noted above, school gardens benefit from a secure fence. Wire mesh fencing with wooden or metal posts is usually more cost effective than wooden slat or picket fencing. Choose your preferred material, and then calculate the length needed by measuring around the perimeter. Be sure to add clearance for paths around all sides of each bed. Paths greater than three feet will accommodate a wheelbarrow (allowing you to turn and dump its contents).
As you design your garden and build your list of supplies, consider what local sources might be available. Is there a local garden center that will give you a discount on supplies Can families assist with installation to reduce or eliminate labor costs Local service groups may also be eager to help through labor or monetary donations.
Through a partnership with Michigan State University Extension, parents, students, and teachers at Traverse Heights have created a garden where students learn about agriculture and healthy eating in a hands-on way. The school garden has been in place for seven years and currently features 17 raised beds, an outdoor hoop house, and an indoor greenhouse.
Wherever your school is located, a garden can offer hands-on learning that connects children to nature, their food, and one another. Gardens give educators the chance to link lessons to real life, in a context that children can understand. A-weighting: A measurement scale that approximates the \"loudness\" of tones relative to a 40-dB sound pressure level, 1,000-Hz reference tone. A weighting is said to best fit the frequency response of the human ear: when a sound dosimeter is set to A-weighting, it responds to the frequency components of sound much like your ear responds. A-weighting has the added advantage of being correlated with annoyance measures and is most responsive to the mid-frequencies, 500 Hz to 4,000 Hz.

Soil testing is not the answer to all problems in growing a crop or in maintaining a healthy yard and garden. Poor plant growth or loss of yield may also be caused by insects, diseases, weed competition, pesticide residues, or excessively wet or dry conditions. When done properly, soil testing is a useful and economical tool for managing crop plant nutrition.
The recommendations below assume that the pond or lake is used for recreational purposes. If your pond is used as a source of drinking water for livestock, consult Interpreting Drinking Water Results for Dairy Cows.
Measurable alkalinity in a pond provides a buffer that maintains the pH of the pond or lake. The pH of ponds with low or zero alkalinity may easily change resulting in damage to aquatic life. A healthy pond should have some measurable alkalinity. Ponds with less than 20 mg/L of alkalinity are more prone to stunted or absent fish populations. These ponds may benefit from liming to increase the pH and alkalinity as described above.
Warm muggy nights and well-planted ponds can deplete oxygen levels and the largest fish will be first to succumb. Golden orfe are particularly susceptible to low oxygen levels so if the dead fish was your largest and an orfe, it was probably oxygen. Oxygen test kits are available, so test oxygen levels at night and in the daytime, to see if the levels alter. If oxygen levels are going dangerously low, use an air pump and airstone (especially at night,) to improve gaseous exchange, and to oxygenate the water.
The next biggest killer of pond fish is from disease. Pond fish can die from a whole host of viral, bacterial and parasitic diseases, none of which can be seen with the naked eye. Have a look at the other fish in the pond as a fish disease is rarely isolated to one individual. Are the other fish active, with spread fins, and feeding Or are they looking lethargic, with clamped fins, and hanging in the water If it's the latter disease may be what killed your fish and the remaining fish will need treating with a pond medication.
If you are not sure what disease your fish may have, treat the pond with general disease treatment. If they have obvious disease symptoms like Whitespot or Fungus, treat with a medication aimed at exactly that. The best possible way to diagnose fish disease is to get an expert to take a skin scrape. They will then be able to identify the parasite and you can then treat accordingly. Accurately work out the volume of your pond, turn off the UV if required to do so and use the full duration of treatment as directed by the medicine manufacturer.
It is, of course, possible that your pond fish has died from old age, although expect koi and goldfish to live for twenty years or more in an outside pond. Most fish are only in their first or second year when you buy them so if they die within a couple of years it's highly unlikely to be from old age.

Pond filters are essential for ponds that have livestock as they help remove waste and stop the water from becoming contaminated for the fish to survive in it. Pond filters not only clear out the visible debris from the water but can also eradicate toxic chemicals that may cause your fish and pond plants harm.
Mechanical pond filters help remove the physical waste and debris from the pond water; they can be sponges, brushes or vortexes that help eradicate it from the water. Every garden pond needs this basic filtration level to stop the build-up of leaves and fish waste within the pond water. But, it cannot be the only type of filtration the pond has.
Perfect for smaller garden ponds, all-in-one pond filters do it all. They provide mechanical and biological filtration of the water, they are installed directly into the pond; incorporating a pump, filter and ultraviolet clarifier into one system. These systems are great for small, lightly-stocked ponds but will not be sufficient enough to keep larger ponds clean.
Pressurised Pond filters are one of the more popular types of pond filter. They sit externally from your pond and are ideal for light to medium stocked ponds. Your pond pump delivers the water to the pressure filter, which is then passed through the filter media and UVC. The water leaving the filter is still under pressure meaning that you can place the filter anywhere outside of the pond, and it can feed a waterfall or water feature.
Biological or twin purpose pond filter media such as foams should be cleaned regularly until there is no longer visible sludge or waste on it. Tap water or any potentially chlorinated water should not be used to clean your biological pond filter media as it can kill the good bacteria and stop the pond filter from working. Therefore pond water is best suited for this job.
Koi reach 2-3 feet on average with a median lifespan of 20-30 years, sometimes even longer! Traditionally, koi were bred in Japan for hobbyists to collect and place on exhibition due to their exquisite coloration, patterning and scalation, of which more than 100 varieties are recognized. Keeping ornamental koi has become a worldwide passion, and this hardy species makes a great, calming addition to your outdoor pond. Jumpstart your knowledge on creating and maintaining an ideal pondfish habitat year-round.
If your pond is situated in an area where it receives a few hours shade daily, or is partially shaded throughout the day, this will provide an ideal climate. If you live in a particularly hot region, have a small, shallow or densely fish-stocked pond, it is advisable to shade the area with plants, non-toxic water dyes, fish shelters or shade sails to make the fish more comfortable. 153554b96e
